Botulinum Toxin (Botox)

Botulinum toxin — most commonly recognised by the brand name Botox — is one of the most studied and widely administered aesthetic treatments in the world, using a highly purified protein to temporarily relax the facial muscles that create expression lines.

In brief

Botulinum toxin (commonly called Botox) is a purified protein that temporarily relaxes specific facial muscles to smooth expression lines. Injected by a trained practitioner, it produces natural-looking results within days and lasts 3–4 months.

What is botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin type A is a purified neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In aesthetic medicine, it is used in extremely small, precisely measured doses to temporarily block the nerve signals that cause specific facial muscles to contract. Without the muscle contracting, the overlying skin relaxes and dynamic wrinkles — those formed by repeated muscle movement — smooth out.

The treatment does not numb the face or create an expressionless result when administered correctly. A skilled practitioner like Dr Bangalee treats only the targeted muscles while leaving surrounding muscles fully functional, preserving natural facial movement and expression.

What botulinum toxin treats

The most common treatment areas are the glabella (frown lines between the brows), forehead lines, and crow's feet at the corners of the eyes. These are all areas where repeated muscle contractions over years create permanent creases in the overlying skin. Other areas include bunny lines on the nose, lip lines, dimpled chin (mentalis), neck bands (platysma), and brow lifting.

Botulinum toxin treats dynamic wrinkles — those that appear or deepen during facial expression. It is less effective on static wrinkles (present even at rest without muscle contraction), which are better treated with dermal fillers, chemical peels, or resurfacing treatments. Often a combination of both botulinum toxin and fillers achieves the most comprehensive result.

What to expect — treatment and results

Treatment takes 15–30 minutes. A series of small injections are placed with a fine needle into the target muscles. Discomfort is minimal — most patients describe a brief pinching sensation. Most people return to their usual activities promptly, though this varies. Avoid rubbing the treated area for 4 hours and strenuous exercise for 24 hours post-treatment.

Results begin to appear within 3–5 days and reach full effect at 10–14 days. Duration varies by individual, treatment area, and units administered — typically 3–4 months. With consistent treatment, many patients find the results last progressively longer as the target muscles weaken slightly over time.

At Star Aesthetic Centre

Dr Rajeev Bangalee (MBBCh) has extensive experience with botulinum toxin treatments at Star Aesthetic Centre, Durban North. He treats each patient individually — the number of units, placement, and technique are tailored to your facial anatomy and aesthetic goals. We take a conservative, natural-looking approach: the goal is refreshed, not frozen. Consultations are available to discuss what botulinum toxin can and cannot do for your specific concerns.

Frequently asked questions

Does botulinum toxin hurt?

Discomfort is very brief and well-tolerated by most patients. The needles used are very fine. A topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand if preferred. The injection itself is a quick pinch — the whole treatment typically takes under 20 minutes.

How long do results last?

Typically 3–4 months for most areas. Individual metabolism, treatment area, muscle activity, and the number of units used all affect duration. With repeated treatments, results often last progressively longer as muscle activity is gradually reduced over time.

Is botulinum toxin safe?

Yes, when administered by a trained medical practitioner. Botulinum toxin has been used in clinical and aesthetic medicine for over 30 years and has an excellent safety record at the doses used in aesthetic treatments. Side effects are uncommon and temporary — mild bruising, headache, or asymmetry that resolves within weeks. Serious complications are extremely rare with proper technique and anatomy knowledge.

Can I have botulinum toxin while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Botulinum toxin treatments are contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, please inform Dr Bangalee before treatment.
