PRP & Hair Restoration
Your Own Growth Factors — Medically Assessed Hair & Skin Regeneration
Hair loss is rarely just cosmetic, and it is rarely one thing. Thyroid disease, iron deficiency, hormonal shifts and medication all cause hair to thin, and treating the scalp without establishing the cause is guesswork. At Star Aesthetic, PRP begins with a medical assessment — because Dr. Bangalee is a doctor first. Where PRP is the right answer, it uses the growth factors in your own blood to stimulate follicles that are struggling but still alive.

What is PRP & Hair Restoration?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is prepared by drawing a small sample of your own blood and spinning it in a centrifuge, which separates it by density into layers. The platelet-rich layer — concentrated well above normal blood levels — is drawn off and used for treatment.
Platelets contain growth factors that play a central role in the body's natural healing and tissue-repair processes. Delivered into the scalp, these growth factors increase blood supply to the hair follicle, prolong the growth (anagen) phase, and can reverse the miniaturisation that causes hair to become progressively finer before it stops growing altogether.
Because PRP is derived entirely from your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction or rejection is very low — one of its advantages over synthetic alternatives. It is not risk-free: bruising, tenderness and, rarely, infection remain possible with any injection.
One limit must be stated plainly: PRP stimulates follicles that are still alive. Where a follicle has been dormant for years and the scalp is genuinely bald, PRP has nothing to work with. It is a treatment for thinning, not for restoring hair that is already gone — which is exactly why the assessment comes first, and why Dr. Bangalee will tell you directly if your pattern of loss is beyond what PRP can address.
For skin, PRP is most commonly combined with Dermapen microneedling. The micro-channels created by needling allow the concentrated growth factors to penetrate more deeply, amplifying the skin's natural collagen response beyond what microneedling achieves alone. This combination is used particularly for significant acne scarring and stubborn pigmentation.

Expected Results & Timeline
Weeks 1–4: Some patients report reduced shedding at this stage — less hair in the brush or shower drain — though not everyone does, and it is not a reliable indicator of how the course will go. Weeks 8–12: Early regrowth of fine new hairs, and existing hair feeling thicker and stronger. Months 3–6: Visible improvement in density as new hairs mature and the growth phase lengthens. After the initial course: Where PRP has helped, maintenance sessions are typically discussed at intervals of around 4–6 months; the interval is set by Dr. Bangalee against your own response rather than a fixed schedule. PRP manages an ongoing process rather than curing it. Results vary considerably between patients and depend heavily on the cause of hair loss and how early treatment begins. Where a follicle is genuinely dormant, PRP cannot revive it, and Dr. Bangalee will set that expectation clearly at consultation.
Downtime & Aftercare:
Expect tenderness, mild swelling and redness of the scalp for 24–48 hours, and pinpoint bruising at injection sites is possible. Do not wash your hair for 24 hours after treatment, and avoid hair products, colouring or chemical treatments for 48 hours. Skip intense exercise, saunas and swimming for 24 hours. Most patients return to work the same day. Where PRP is combined with microneedling on the face, expect facial redness resembling mild sunburn for 24–48 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PRP hurt?
The blood draw is a standard needle prick. Scalp injections are the more uncomfortable part — the scalp is sensitive — but topical anaesthetic is applied beforehand and the needle is very fine. Most patients rate it as tolerable and manageable, and it is over quickly. Tenderness for a day or so afterwards is normal.
How many sessions will I need?
An initial course commonly runs to 3–4 sessions spaced roughly 4–6 weeks apart, with maintenance considered thereafter. These are typical ranges rather than a fixed protocol — Dr. Bangalee sets your schedule from the cause and extent of your hair loss and how you respond. A single session is unlikely to produce a lasting result.
Will PRP regrow hair where I am completely bald?
No — and this is the most important thing to understand before booking. PRP stimulates follicles that are still alive but miniaturising. Where an area has been bald for years and the follicles are dormant, there is nothing for PRP to stimulate. It is a treatment for thinning, not for restoring lost hair. Dr. Bangalee will assess your pattern of loss and tell you honestly what is achievable.
Is PRP safe?
Because PRP uses your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction or disease transmission is very low. It is not without risk: bruising, tenderness, swelling and, rarely, infection are possible, as with any injection. It must only be performed by a trained medical practitioner in a properly sterile clinical setting, and suitability is assessed individually.
Why does the assessment include blood tests?
Because hair loss is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency, hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficiency and certain medications all cause hair to thin — and no amount of PRP will fix hair loss driven by an untreated thyroid problem or low ferritin. Establishing the cause first is what makes this a medical treatment rather than a cosmetic one.
How is PRP used for skin rather than hair?
For skin, PRP is most commonly combined with Dermapen microneedling. The micro-channels created by the needling allow the growth factors to penetrate deeply, amplifying the collagen-building response beyond microneedling alone. It is used particularly for significant acne scarring and stubborn pigmentation, where an enhanced healing response justifies the additional treatment.
Can I wash my hair afterwards?
Not for 24 hours. After that, wash gently with a mild shampoo. Avoid hair colouring, chemical straightening or other chemical treatments for 48 hours, and avoid swimming pools and saunas for 24 hours.
Can PRP be combined with other hair loss treatments?
Yes, and combination usually outperforms any single approach. PRP works well alongside topical and oral medical therapy where those are appropriate for you. Dr. Bangalee will discuss the full range of medical options at your assessment rather than presenting PRP as the only answer.
How soon will I see a difference?
Where PRP helps, the first change reported is often reduced shedding during the first month, and any visible new growth more commonly appears from around 8–12 weeks, with density continuing to change through months 3–6. These are patterns seen in some patients, not outcomes that can be promised — response varies with the cause of the hair loss and some patients see little change. If you are expecting a difference within a fortnight, the timeline needs resetting before you start.
Who should not have PRP?
PRP is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in patients with blood disorders, platelet dysfunction, active infection at the treatment site, active malignancy, or those on anticoagulant therapy that cannot be safely interrupted. A full medical history and, where indicated, blood tests are taken before treatment is agreed.
Who Is This For?
- ✓Patients with early to moderate hair thinning — reduced density, a widening part, or a receding temporal hairline where follicles are miniaturising but not yet lost.
- ✓Those with androgenetic hair loss (male or female pattern) who want a medical treatment option alongside or instead of topical and oral therapy.
- ✓Women experiencing post-partum, stress-related or hormonally driven shedding, once the underlying cause has been medically assessed.
- ✓Patients wanting a treatment using their own biological material, with no synthetic product and essentially no allergy risk.
- ✓Those with significant acne scarring or stubborn pigmentation where PRP combined with Dermapen microneedling enhances the healing and collagen response beyond microneedling alone.
- ✓Patients prepared to commit to a course of sessions and a realistic timeline — PRP is a programme, not a single appointment.
