In brief

Mesoestetic is a Spanish pharmaceutical skincare brand best known for the Cosmelan® depigmentation system — one of the world's most effective professional treatments for melasma and stubborn hyperpigmentation.

About Mesoestetic

Founded in 1991 in Barcelona, Mesoestetic develops aesthetic medicine products used by physicians and professional cosmetics for clinical home-use protocols. The company is research-led — all protocols are backed by clinical studies and are used by aesthetic physicians, dermatologists, and skin clinics across more than 70 countries.

Beyond depigmentation, Mesoestetic offers comprehensive treatment systems for anti-ageing (the age element range), acne (acne one), and skin rejuvenation (the mesoprotech photoprotection range). All products are formulated for professional use and available exclusively through authorised medical practices.

Cosmelan® — a professional depigmentation system

Cosmelan® is a two-part system: an in-clinic treatment mask applied by a practitioner, followed by a comprehensive home-maintenance kit. It works by inhibiting tyrosinase — the key enzyme in melanin synthesis — through a synergistic combination of actives including kojic acid, phytic acid, ascorbic acid, azelaic acid, and arbutin.

Clinical studies show significant reduction in melanin index after a single Cosmelan protocol. It is the treatment of choice for melasma — one of the most challenging pigmentation conditions to treat — and is equally effective for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in medium to dark skin tones. The home maintenance phase is critical for maintaining results and preventing recurrence.

At Star Aesthetic Centre

Star Aesthetic Centre offers the full Cosmelan® depigmentation protocol. Dr. Bangalee has particular expertise in treating melasma and hyperpigmentation in KwaZulu-Natal's diverse patient population — and Cosmelan® is one of our most sought-after treatments. The clinic manages the complete protocol: skin preparation, in-clinic mask application, and the full home-maintenance phase with regular check-ins. SPF 50+ compliance is mandatory throughout the protocol.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cosmelan® suitable for dark skin?

Yes — Cosmelan® was specifically developed for difficult pigmentation in medium to dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick Types III–VI). However, it must be applied and monitored by an experienced practitioner. Strict SPF 50+ use and protocol adherence during the home maintenance phase are essential for results and safety.

How many Cosmelan® treatments do I need?

The standard protocol is one in-clinic application followed by several months of home maintenance. Most patients see significant improvement after one complete protocol. A second treatment may be recommended for very deep or long-established melasma.
