About This Product

Is SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense right for you?

  • If you have stubborn hyperpigmentation, melasma, or dark spots that have not responded to basic brightening products — Discoloration Defense uses a multi-pathway approach targeting pigmentation at several points in the melanin production process simultaneously.
  • If you have post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) from acne, injuries, or procedures — the formula accelerates the fading of dark marks left after skin trauma.
  • If you have been using hydroquinone and want a non-hydroquinone maintenance option — the combination of tranexamic acid, niacinamide, and kojic acid provides effective brightening without the long-term concerns associated with hydroquinone.
  • If you have Fitzpatrick III–VI skin with significant pigmentation concerns — the formula is well tolerated across darker skin tones.
  • If you are committed to consistent SPF use — brightening actives only work if you prevent new UV-triggered pigmentation from forming while correcting existing discolouration.

How SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense works — the science

Discoloration Defense targets pigmentation through three independent mechanisms, which is what makes it more effective than single-active brighteners. Tranexamic Acid (3%) — originally developed as a haemostatic drug — inhibits the interaction between keratinocytes and melanocytes that occurs in response to UV exposure and inflammation. By blocking this communication pathway, it reduces the melanocyte stimulation that triggers melanin overproduction.

Kojic Acid (1%) — derived from fungi during sake fermentation — directly inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that catalyses melanin synthesis. Niacinamide (5%) works downstream, inhibiting the transfer of melanosomes from melanocytes to keratinocytes, preventing pigment from reaching the skin surface even when it has been produced. HEPES, an alpha-hydroxy acid, accelerates cellular turnover to physically exfoliate and remove already-pigmented surface cells. Clinical studies show this four-pronged attack outperforms single-ingredient alternatives.

What you will notice — and when

Immediately — Light, fast-absorbing texture; no immediate visible effect.

Week 2–4 — PIH marks may begin to appear slightly less defined; overall skin tone starts to even out.

Month 2–3 — Visible lightening of dark spots and hyperpigmentation with consistent twice-daily application; melasma patches appear less dense; skin tone significantly more even.

How to use SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense

  1. Apply morning and evening after cleansing and vitamin C serum (if using).
  2. Apply targeted amounts to pigmented areas and blend outward across the face.
  3. Allow to absorb before applying moisturiser.
  4. Always use SPF 30 or higher every morning — brightening actives are rendered ineffective without sun protection.
  5. For stubborn melasma, use in conjunction with a prescribed treatment plan from Dr. Bangalee.

Dr. Bangalee's clinical perspective

Dr. Bangalee Recommends
"Discoloration Defense is one of the most clinically effective over-the-counter brightening serums I have used. The multi-pathway approach is scientifically sound — by targeting tyrosinase inhibition, melanocyte-keratinocyte signalling, and melanosome transfer simultaneously, you achieve results that single-ingredient products simply cannot match. For my patients with melasma or significant post-inflammatory pigmentation, this forms a cornerstone of their at-home protocol alongside strict SPF discipline." Dr. Rajeev Bangalee

What our patients say

"I have had melasma for years and tried many products with no results. This serum alongside strict SPF use has faded my patches more than anything else I've tried. It takes time but it genuinely works."
Yasmeen, Durban North
"The acne marks on my chin were bothering me so much. After six weeks of using this morning and night, they are barely visible. I wish I had found this sooner."
Lungelo, Berea
"My sun damage from years on the beach was making me look older than I am. Dr. B put me on this and my skin tone is more even than it has been in a decade."
Angela, Ballito

Frequently asked questions

QuestionAnswer
Is it safe for darker skin tones?Yes — it is well tolerated across all Fitzpatrick skin types. The ingredients are specifically chosen to be effective and non-irritating for Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin.
How long do I need to use it before seeing results?Meaningful results on established hyperpigmentation typically appear at 8–12 weeks. PIH marks from acne may respond faster. Patience and consistency are essential.
Can I use it with my vitamin C serum?Yes — apply vitamin C serum first, allow it to absorb, then apply Discoloration Defense. They target pigmentation through different pathways and work well together.
What happens if I stop using it?Pigmentation may gradually return, especially with ongoing sun exposure. Many patients use it cyclically — 3 months on, 1 month off — or continue indefinitely for maintenance.
Is it safe during pregnancy?Tranexamic acid safety in topical form during pregnancy has limited data. As a precaution, pause brightening actives during pregnancy and consult your obstetrician.
